Winter is not far off. With winter comes the cold weather that can have an impact on how your car performs. To ensure continued optimal performance as the mercury dips, be sure to make an appointment with our Mazda service center.
We recommend having the following components inspected by one of our technicians.
Battery
Cold weather reduces the battery’s ability to send cranking power to the engine. A technician can quickly inspect the battery to determine its remaining charge and also check for any corrosion, damage, or loose cables/connections. We especially recommend a battery inspection if it’s at least five years old; that’s about the average lifespan of a car battery.
Oil
Motor oil thickens when exposed to cold temperatures and can sometimes even turn into a semi-solid state. When the oil is thick, its lubrication ability diminishes dramatically. This causes the metal parts to grind and elevates the risk of the engine overheating. This can occur even when the temperature is freezing outside.
Tires
Tire tread depth is especially important for winter driving. Ample tread depth ensures the tire surface can firmly grip the road when the pavement is wet or icy. A technician at the dealership can examine the tires to be sure the treads are wearing evenly.
Coolant
Be sure there is enough anti-freeze. This is an essential fluid that keeps the engine from freezing. A technician can refill coolant levels as well as check the hoses for potential leaks. Our maintenance crew often uses a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water, which has a lower freezing point than pure coolant.
